ArPen is better against squishy targets?

Here's something interesting that I felt I should share:

Is Talon really going to have a problem killing a squishy regardless of what he builds?

Let's use Ashe as an example, as she's a great squishy example.

Her base armor at level 18 is 70. Her base health is 1781.
ArPen Runes+ghostblade will bring her to 19 armor, or 16% reduction. 2065 EHP.
Flat AD+LW will bring her to 38 armor, or 28% reduction. 2280 EHP.

Assuming she builds pure dps, it would take a measly additional 215 damage to kill her. But you're now able to actually hurt their tanks and bruisers. And, if she decides to build one armor item because you're killing her too much, you're now more effective against her than you would be if you had ArPen.

An Introduction

Hi, I'm Breaku. I play League of Legends, a lot, and I'm the admin here.

I have some credentials. I'm half decent at math. I'm a logical thinker. I've got a little Gold Star on the League forums, and at the time of this article I'm 1625 in solo queue ranked 5s.

Before coming to League of Legends, I played a lot of World of Warcraft. Not that it really matters, but I played a priest, and I got Duelist like six times (seasons 1-6) or some nonsense before quitting that game.

I also freelance as a writer for the sponsor of this blog, That Blank Media.

What I'm going to be doing with Flavor of the Month, Over Powered, is provide some builds and or advice with math or reasoning to back it up. If you've got a question, feel free to add me in game (just going to kill this one now, I don't duo ranked, but I'd probably play normals with whoever.) or ask anywhere on this little simple blog.

You can listen to me, or not, but usually what I say is right or damn near close to it. And always feel free to correct me.

Mathcraft: Armor Penetration or Flat AD runes?

Edit on Nov 15; a follow up is available here http://fotmop.blogspot.com/2011/10/arpen-is-better-against-squishy-targets.html

What runes will give my auto attacks the most damage?

This is an important question to be able to answer before you start your item build in game. You first need to know what runes to select. For the purposes of this article, we will use two talons auto attacking each other at various levels and item values. Critical hits and attack speed will not be taken into account.

Applicable masteries: Sunder and Brut force.
Runes: Talon A will run with Armor Pen, Talon B will run with flat AD.

Talon A - Level 1 (Doran's Blade)
Attack Damage: 63 (Hits B for 63)
Armor: 15 (Effective vrs B: 9 or 8.3% reduction)
Armor Pen: 31

Talon B - Level 1 (Doran's Blade)
Attack Damage: 78 (Hits A for 71.52)
Armor: 15 (Effective vrs A: 0 or 0% reduction)
Armor Pen: 6

Advantage: Flat AD by 12%.

Now, where does that advantage switch? Not long after level 1, really. By the time they hit level 6, Talon A will have reversed the advantage completely. And He will maintain it until penetration items are purchased.

Now hitting eachother, that's great and all, but what about high armor targets later in the game? What armor point does Flat AD with a last whisperer overtake ArPen with a ghostblade?

Well, Talon A has 45 more armor pen than Talon B, once Talon A finishes his ghostblade, and Talon B has 40% more penetration than Talon A. Obviously 40% will eventually yield more penetration than 45.. and that point is approximately 115 armor. So, on all targets Higher than 115 armor, Flat AD has the advantage once again.

So, which one is better? I personally have both pages set up. At my Elo people pretty much always have more than 115 armor, so I find myself typically going for flat AD. But if their team is very squishy, I'll take out my ArPen runes and have fun.
